KANDLA GREY INDIAN SANDSTONE PAVING

What is Kandla Grey Sandstone?

Kandla Grey sandstone is a type of Indian sandstone, which is the UK’s favourite type of natural stone paving. This particular type of grey Indian sandstone has a gentle blue-grey colour, with occasional beige shadings. It’s favoured for its contemporary look, and has an even colour consistency that makes it a popular choice for outdoor spaces.

Like other forms of Indian sandstone, Kandla Grey has a naturally rough texture, but can be supplied with a smooth sawn surface or hand-chiselled designs, depending on your vision for your space.

Kandla Grey Indian Sandstone gets its name from the Indian seaport of Kandla in Western India, where it’s quarried before being shipped over to the UK.

Should you seal Kandla Grey sandstone paving?

If you want it to keep its pristine appearance, then yes. Here at Bridge Street Stone we always recommend sealing grey Indian sandstone once it’s laid, as it keeps it looking better for longer.

By its nature, Kandla Grey Indian sandstone is porous. Since moisture is capable of penetrating its surface, it can therefore be permanently stained or marked by liquid, unless it’s been sealed in advance. We recommend HG Impregnator as a standard treatment for natural stone, which protects it against the penetration of dirt and grease stains. Alternatively, Nexus colour-enhancing sealer is another excellent choice. If you need more detailed or specific advice, we’re always happy to help!

Is Kandla Grey sandstone good for paving?

Yes. Kandla Grey Indian sandstone can be used for both indoor and outdoor spaces, but it’s is an especially popular choice for exterior paving areas, due to the consistency of its colour and the smart, uniform appearance it gives to a space. It also often provides an excellent contrast to other elements of a garden or patio, such as the surrounding greenery and furniture. And when it gets wet - as it so often does in the later months of the year - it takes on a uniquely appealing look.

And of course, grey Indian Sandstone shares the same core set of advantages with all other types of Indian sandstone. Namely, that it provides great value for money, it’s highly durable, and provides an almost endless array of design possibilities. It’s also very hardwearing, and as long as it’s cared for properly, it’s more than capable of enduring the harshest of elements.

Kandla Grey Indian sandstone paving pros and cons

Like all types of Indian sandstone, Kandla Grey Indian sandstone has a range of associated pros and cons. It’s sophisticated appearance and practical advantages are amongst its most popular draws for buyers, and happily it has very few drawbacks.

Pros:

  • It’s durable and long lasting, capable of withstanding heavy rain and frosty conditions, while steadily adding value to your property over their lifetime
  • Its beautiful appearance. Kandla Grey Indian Sandstone is famed for its mix of soft, light blues and mellow greys.
  • It can be made into a wide variety of patterns and designs, allowing you to match it to the look of your property, or show off your creativity with a whole new look for your space.
  • It’s easy to maintain. Once grey Indian sandstone is sealed, removing dirt and grime should pose no problem.
  • It’s eco-friendly, as there are fewer damaging chemicals involved in its manufacturing process, and it can be recycled at the end of its lifespan. (But don’t forget to check that yours is ethically sourced!)
  • It’s affordable and widely available, so you’ll always get great value.

Cons:

  • It’s porous, which can vulnerable to stains and marks from liquids, bacteria or mould. However, this can be avoided as long as it’s been properly sealed.
  • Its roughness - Indian sandstone is 100% natural, so certain types can be a little rough on bare feet.
  • It can be marked - like all Indian sandstone, Kandla Grey Indian sandstone is a relatively soft type of stone compared to certain other options on the market. This means that unless care is taken around it, sudden hard impacts can cause visible scratches and other marks relatively easily. However, as long as you’re not dragging or dropping anything heavy on your grey Indian sandstone, you shouldn’t have to worry about it too much.
