Natural Colour Variation in Autumn Brown Indian Sandstone
Autumn Brown Indian Sandstone is known for its rich, warm tones — with each piece offering a blend of medium to dark browns, soft oranges, and occasional hints of grey. This natural colour variation gives the paving a rustic, well-worn appearance, ideal for traditional garden designs and cottage-style landscapes.
Because it's a natural product, no two kits are exactly alike — but the variation between stones creates a cohesive and authentic finish. A colour-enhancing sealer can also be used to deepen the tones and highlight natural veining.
Autumn Brown Indian Sandstone – Colour Variations in Wet & Dry Conditions
Like all natural sandstone, Autumn Brown changes tone depending on weather conditions:
-
When Dry – The surface shows soft, dusty browns and oranges with a chalky, natural finish.
-
When Wet – The colours darken significantly, becoming richer, deeper, and more contrasting, revealing the stone’s full range of tones and texture.
If you love the bold, wet look year-round, consider applying a breathable sealer with colour enhancement.

Step-by-Step Guide to Laying a Patio
How to Lay a Stone Paving Circle – Step-by-Step Guide
Installing a stone paving circle is a great way to create a beautiful focal point in your garden or patio. Whether you're using it as a standalone feature or incorporating it into a larger paved area, this guide will walk you through each step of the process to ensure a clean, long-lasting finish.
✅ What You’ll Need:
-
Your chosen stone circle kit (centre + rings, with or without squaring-off kit)
-
MOT Type 1 sub-base material
-
Sharp sand and cement for mortar (typical mix 4:1)
-
String line and centre peg (for layout)
-
Priming slurry (optional but recommended)
-
Spirit level
-
Rubber mallet
-
Grout or jointing compound
🪨 Step 1: Prepare the Base
-
Mark out the area using the circle size as a guide. Use a peg and string line to mark a perfect circle.
-
Excavate to a depth of approx. 150–200mm, depending on ground conditions.
-
Add and compact 100–125mm of MOT Type 1 hardcore to form a solid sub-base.
-
Ensure the area is level, with a slight fall away from the centre for drainage (typically 1:60).
⚙️ Step 2: Dry Lay & Plan Your Layout
-
Dry lay the full circle before fixing to ensure correct spacing and placement.
-
Start with the centre piece, then work outwards in rings.
-
If using the squaring-off kit, decide how you want it to align with existing paving or garden features.
🧱 Step 3: Lay the Paving Circle
-
Mix a mortar bed (4 parts sharp sand to 1 part cement) to a workable consistency.
-
Begin with the centre stone, laying it on a full mortar bed around 30–40mm thick.
-
Use a priming slurry on the back of each piece to improve adhesion (especially recommended for smoother stone).
-
Work outwards, laying each ring of stones one at a time, using a rubber mallet to level and position each slab.
-
Maintain consistent joints between each stone (typically 10–15mm).
🧽 Step 4: Jointing & Finishing
-
Allow the paving to set for 24–48 hours before jointing.
-
Use a suitable jointing compound or mortar to fill gaps between the stones.
-
Clean off excess grout and rinse the surface thoroughly before it dries.
🔲 If Using a Squaring-Off Kit:
-
Lay the squaring-off pieces after the full circle is complete and set, ensuring they line up neatly with the surrounding paving.
-
Continue your patio from these squared edges for a seamless finish.
🛠️ Top Tips:
-
Always check your levels and alignment with a string line or spirit level as you go.
-
Wear gloves and safety goggles when mixing mortar or using tools.
-
For best results, lay on a dry day above 5°C and avoid heavy rain for 48 hours after installation.

How to Clean & Maintain Indian Sandstone
To keep your Indian Sandstone paving looking its best, regular maintenance is key. Sweep away debris to prevent dirt build-up and clean periodically with a mild soapy water solution or a specialist stone cleaner. Avoid using harsh chemicals or pressure washers at high settings, as they can damage the stone’s surface. For long-term protection, consider applying a breathable sealant to help resist stains and enhance colour retention. Over time, natural weathering will add character, but with proper care, your sandstone will remain a beautiful feature in your outdoor space for years to come.
