Here at Bridge Street Stone, we specialise in Indian sandstone paving. If you have a patio made from Indian sandstone or you’re considering one, you'll be all too familiar with just how stunning and versatile these slabs are. From our Kandla Grey to Golden Leaf, the rich textures and earthy tones of this natural stone add a timeless charm to any space. However, with increased foot traffic, the addition of garden furniture, and all the summer activities, it's essential to protect your sandstone patio to ensure it remains in pristine condition throughout the season—and here's how to do it!
Seal your stones in summer
Sealing your Indian sandstone patio is the first step in properly caring for it, and this goes for the summer months just as much as it does winter. Without a protective seal, your sandstone is vulnerable to water damage and fading from the sun's UV rays, as well as stains from any drink spills, piles of leaves, or anything else that spills onto the surface.
The timing of sealing varies for every garden. Generally speaking, patios should be resealed every three years or so, but this can vary depending on levels of foot traffic and how weathered your stones are by the elements. If it's been a while since your last sealing, or if you’re noticing signs of wear, it could be time to reseal.
If you’re looking for great sealants and cleaners, we have a variety of options here at Bridge Street Stone. Our Nexus Pro-410 Paving Sealer and HG Impregnating Protector are both great options. They're perfect for protecting your paving from staining against most liquids, including oil, petrol and water (which is ideal for bbq season)!
Implement a regular cleaning schedule
Once you've got your stones sealed, you need to keep them on top of their appearance with regular cleaning - nothing too tedious; it could be anything from regular sweeping with a soft-bristle broom to the occasional rinse down with the hose, which will prevent the build-up of dirt and debris. Little and often is the key!Always clean up any spills immediately using a mild soap and water solution to avoid staining the sandstone. If you let stains sit, they may sink too deeply, and when you get around to cleaning them, you may not be able to remove them, leaving unsightly splotches on the surface.
Avoid scratches from heavy outdoor furniture
Heavy or sharp-edged garden furniture can leave marks if it's dragged across your Indian Sandstone, but there are simple ways to prevent this. One easy solution is to put protective pads or rubber feet under the legs of your tables and chairs. These pads or feet act like cushions, reducing the chance of scratches by softening the contact between the furniture and the stone.Another great option (weather permitting) is to use outdoor rugs under heavy furniture. Not only do rugs add style to your patio, but they also help protect the sandstone by spreading out the weight and reducing pressure points that could lead to scratches.
Cook with caution
Outdoor cooking is arguably one of the best things about summer; who doesn't love dining alfresco? But it can also be risky for your Indian sandstone patio if you're not careful. Barbecues, grills, and fire pits can leave behind grease, oil, and food stains that are tough to clean off the stone. Also, avoid placing hot items like grills, pots, or pans directly on the sandstone. The heat can cause the stone to discolour or even crack. To protect your patio, always use a grill mat or protective layer under your barbecue or fire pit. This helps catch spills before they get onto the stone and prevent any unexpected accidents with your stones. These are just a few of our suggestions for the summer - you may have some of your own tips and tricks!
